Southern Pacific - Road #: SP 4762 - Bay Window Caboose

This bay window caboose is painted white with multi-colored Southern Pacific Railroad Police Shield and black lettering. It was built between March and May 1980 by International Car Co. / PACCAR and runs on Bettendorf Swing-Motion trucks. In an attempt to combat theft on trains, Southern Pacific painted a number of C-50-9 Class cabooses with Police badges and lettering. They were used on trains along with an SP Police Car (auto) pacing the train to deter people from boarding and stealing or damaging lading and railroad equipment. Along with the regular train crew, SP Railroad Police or Special Agents rode in the caboose to monitor the train.
