This 43’ rapid discharge hopper is black with yellow lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built by Ortner Freight Car Company in September 1976. Stenciled with the large “Ches-C” logo, these H-61 class hoppers are considered “rapid discharge” cars, able to self-clear a heavy aggregate load through the bottom of the car within 30 seconds. Chessie System was formed through the 1972 mergers of Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland. It was one of the largest Class 1 railroads until 1986 when Seaboard System merged with Chessie to form CSX Transportation.
