Built in 1975 by Bethlehem Steel for the Reading Railroad, this GHy-class gondola with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was 2,263 cubic feet in capacity. Reading can be traced back to 1833 as the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, one of the first railroads in the United States. Over time it became just ‘Reading,’ and remained profitable through World War I. By the 1960s, declining profits lead to bankruptcy in 1971. In 1976, the remaining assets were merged with other railroads to form Conrail.
